NEOATEÍSMO: PRINCIPAIS CONCEITOS E IMPLICAÇÕES NA SOCIEDADE CONTEMPORÂNEA

Abstract

This dissertation aims to show that new atheism has brought to contemporary society a more active and militant proposal of atheism and contributed to the conversion of more sympathizers and followers of the atheist message. What are the main concepts and thoughts that guide modern atheism? What actions and implications have contributed to the advance of the acceptance of the atheist movement and the breaking of prejudice that always the disbelief in God or in the transcendent has carried throughout history? These were the main points that drove this research. The aim of this paper is to present a succinct explanation of new atheism, its origin and a correct definition, as well as to expose the main new atheean thinkers and their contributions to the cause today. The specific objectives are: To conceptualize and seek the origin of atheism and new atheism throughout history; present the six main percussors of new atheism and how they contribute to the growth of the movement; and point out the implications that the new atheism has had on society and the current religious landscape. The research leads to the need to know more deeply modern atheism, a subject little worked in the academy, and thus bring more knowledge so that people leave prejudice and recognize the movement as acceptable. The applied methodology was the bibliographical revision from the study on atheism and new atheism in contemporary society, through its main authors, namely: Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Daniel Dennett, Michel Onfray and André Comte-Sponville
